Committed to continuous learning, I have expanded my working IT environments to include Linux. I am pleased to share a consolidated version of my Linux resources in my Github repository, bringing together insights from previous LinkedIn posts and articles. Whether you are learning Linux, building virtual labs, or strengthening foundational IT skills, this guide is designed to be a helpful starting point on your journey.

This beginner’s guide provides practical tips, step-by-step instructions, and community insights to make setting up Ubuntu on desktops or virtual machines straightforward and approachable. With its intuitive interface and supportive ecosystem, Ubuntu remains one of the most accessible and welcoming introductions to the world of Linux.

Learning Linux via Virtualization

Virtualization is an excellent way to become familiar with a Linux operating system in a safe and secure environment without affecting the host operating system. VirtualBox enables safe experimentation with multiple virtual environments, allowing users to experiment without risk. Snapshots enable easy recovery from failed configurations. Here are two Linux desktop virtual machines setup:

VMware Workstation Pro & Fusion 25H2

Kali Linux

Kali Linux is a powerful, Debian-based Linux distribution designed for advanced penetration testing, ethical hacking, and cybersecurity research. Kali Linux has pre-built virtual machines for VMware and VirtualBox available. These images have the default credentials “kali/kali”.
